Library OverviewThis overview of the library’s resources and services will assist you in taking full advantage of what is available to you as a patron of the library. We hope you visit the library often. Library Card You will receive one card per household freee if within Garland City limits. Each family member can check out items with that card, or by parents name with parental permission. Parent can make a request for limitations to be placed on their patron account. Lending Information All circulating books and audiobooks can be checked out for 14 days with the following exceptions: *Videos/DVDs check out for 7 days. *Reference books do not check out. Renewal Library materials may be renewed up to two times provided that the item is not on the waiting list for another person. You can renew items in person or over the phone. Reserve If the library item you would like is checked out, it can be placed on reserve, and you will receive a call when the item is available. Overdue Fines and other Charges The library charges overdue fines of .10 cents per item per day. When the amount of fines owed on one card exceeds $5.00, the card is blocked until the fines are paid. There is a $5.00 cap on fines per item. The library will charge for materials that are lost or damaged. If an item is returned to the library damaged, a charge will be placed on the patron account. The cost for a lost item will be the replacement cost of the item plus a $2.00 processing fee. InterLibrary Loan If the material you would like is not owned by the library, you may request the item through the library’s interlibrary loan system. It is possible for us to borrow books, magazine articles, and audio visual materials from other libraries through this system for your use. There is a $2.00 charge to acquire an item through ILL. Other Resources The library offers public access to the Internet including access to e-mail. This service is offered for adult use, and on a first come first serve basis with a 45 minute time limit per session. Back-to-back sign up is allowed only if another patron is not waiting to use the workstations. No more that two 45 minute sessions per day allowed. Children under 18 must have an Internet Use Agreement signed by parent or guardian on file at the library. No chat rooms are allowed. Children younger than 8 years old are not allowed on Internet workstations. Services for Children The library now provides a Children’s Room, offering open space for the children to learn and enjoy. This room is accessible through the basement, or upstairs entrance, and we ask that children are accompanied by an adult. This room is open the same hours as the main library. The library provides a wide variety of collections and resources for children. Story Time is held on Thursdays at 4:00 p. m. Suggested age group is ages 2 to 6. A parent or adult must attend with the children. The library also runs a summer reading program for children ages 3 – 10. Look in Kids Korner for a Story Time schedule. Other Services Equipment: The library provides public access to a copy machine, fax machine, and printing from public access computers. The librarians are certified to proctor for several universities for independent study courses. Students are allowed, through their schools, to test at the library with monitoring by the librarian. Library Rules People using the library should try to be as quiet as possible in order to not disturb others using the library. Parents are responsible for the behavior of their children while in the library. Young children cannot be left unattended at any time in the library. Parents are responsible for how their children use the library’s collections and equipment. Parents should monitor their child’s use of these resources in order to prevent damage and/or misuse of these resources Fines will be applied to patron accounts when materials are damaged. No food or beverage may be brought into the library by patrons.
